Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak. This trek in Tanzania will allow you to challenge yourself and discover the various climatic and vegetation zones that surround it, in addition to the dormant volcano that is Kilimanjaro.
Itinerary
- Day 1: MONTREAL - TANZANIA : Participants meet at Montréal-Trudeau airport and take off for Tanzania. Meals and overnight flight
- Day 2: ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA : Arrival at Kilimanjaro airport and welcome by our local representative. Transfer to the lodge and welcome dinner. Overnight stay at your lodge in Arusha. Dinner included
- Day 3: DAY TO ACCLIMATE : Meeting with your local team for a trek briefing, including equipment inspection and bag weighing. You'll have the afternoon to do any last-minute shopping or simply relax before the big climb. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
- Day 4: MACHAME GATE (1,815 m) – MACHAME CAMP (3,050 m) : Departure for the Chagga village of Machame, starting point of the trek. Complete formalities at the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance, and meet your guides and porters. Allow around 7 hours' walk to reach your first bivvy tent, Machame Camp (3050m). The trek begins with a wide trail through the forest reserve before entering denser forest. If you're lucky, you'll spot colobus monkeys and touraco (birds). Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 1185m / Approximate walking time: 7 hrs
- Day 5: MACHAME CAMP – SHIRA CAMP (3,840 m) : Upon leaving your camp, you will get a beautiful view of Kibo Peak. After a short descent, the slope becomes steeper, amid heather, from which lichens fall illuminated by the sun. You then enter a volcanic world, with little vegetation, before arriving on the Shira plateau. In this area, you'll come across small streams and, above all, the first senecons and lobelia. The trail is now flat, and it won't be long before you can see your camp and porters in the distance. During the day, Kibo may be overcast, but you can be sure that at dusk it will be illuminated by the glow of the setting sun. At the opposite end, Mt. Meru will gradually disappear above the Shira needles. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 790m / Approximate walking time: 6.5 hrs
- Day 6: SHIRA CAMP – BARRANCO CAMP (4,025 m) : From your camp, you climb on a direct track towards Lava Tower (4,600m). You'll dominate the entire Shira plateau and gradually approach the glaciers. Lunch at the foot of the immense volcanic tower and a rest before descending into the Grand Barranco, certainly the most beautiful part of the Kilimanjaro massif. This immense canyon is the result of a landslide just over 100,000 years ago. Several small streams meander at the foot of the glaciers, and the camp is lined with lobelia and senecons. The Heim Glacier hangs majestically overhead. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 760m, - 360m / Approximate walking time: 6.5 hrs
- Day 7: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA VALLEY CAMP (4,055 m) : This day has been set aside to get acclimated and to shorten the distance between the Barranco and Barafu Camps. The day begins with an ascent of the Barranco wall and then a traverse of the valleys facing the south side of the mountain. Arrive at Karanga Valley after a descent of around 500m, followed by a fairly arduous ascent. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 200m, -200m / Approximate walking time: 6 hrs
- Day 8: KARANGA VALLEY CAMP – BARAFU CAMP (4,630 m) : Departure for Barafu Camp in an alpine desert environment. A day of trekking, at a very slow pace, and ending with a steep climb. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 575m / Approximate walking time: 5 hrs
- Day 9: BARAFU – STELLA POINT (5,745m) – UHURU PEAK (5,895m) - BARAFU : Start your ascent around 6:00 am and take advantage of a daytime ascent to the summit for a little more warmth and less traffic on the mountain. After a 6-7-hour hike, you'll arrive at the summit, the roof of Africa and a symbol of freedom for the Tanzanian people. Descend along the same path to Barafu Camp, where you'll spend a second night. We advise you to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: + 1265m, - 1265m / Approximate walking time: 10 hrs
- Day 10: BARAFU – MWEKA CAMP (3,100 m) : You continue downhill to the last camp, Mweka, at 3100 m. Night in a bivvy tent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: - 1530m / Approximate walking time: 4 hrs
- Day 11: MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE (1,830 m) - ARUSHA : This 8th day of trekking will mark the end of this adventure! The trail passes through lush forest, where it's common to spot black and white colobus monkeys. Picnic en route or at the park entrance. Transfer to the lodge for a shower and lunch. Transfer to the airport in the late evening if it's an overnight flight, or overnight at your lodge depending on flight times. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Elevation: - 1270m / Approximate walking time: 3 hrs
- Day 12: TANZANIA - MONTREAL : Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your return flight, unless the flight was the previous night. Breakfast included.
